Abstract

Under Maine's tax-deferral program, the state will pay the property taxes on a home and up to 10 acres of land for qualifying senior citizens. State budget cuts closed the program to new applicants two years ago, and only 91 people remain in the program today. Maine is one of 19 states to offer such a program, but few elderly take advantage of the programs nationwide. Details.
