Abstract

Handwriting, which used to be taught in the classroom, has fallen out of vogue over the last decade, as writing teachers emphasized ideas and creativity at the expense of mechanics. The proliferation of computer keyboards also contributed to handwriting lessons being dropped from the curriculum at many schools. A recent survey of 2,600 elementary school teachers showed that 66 percent of the respondents felt that schools should make handwriting a priority, while a similar survey of parents of North Yarmouth Memorial School students was inconclusive.
