Abstract

The Island Institute, a non-profit organization based in Rockland, is proposing to acquire 30 lighthouses from Cape Neddick to West Quoddy from the U.S. Coast Guard, half the lighthouses in Maine. The total value of the property to be transferred is around $7 million, and the deal in some cases would involve entire islands. The Coast Guard, which apparently supports the proposal, would continue to operate navigational devices at the lighthouses. Details, list of lighthouses, related article.
