Abstract

With 4,000 residents, Portland's Parkside neighborhood is, the most densely populated square mile in Maine. For many years, it was synonymous with prostitution and drugs. Five years ago the Parkside Neighborhood Association emerged, and over the years has taken on the prostitutes, drug dealers, rowdies and absentee landlords in the area. A summer work program of the Maine Conservation Corps in June created a 70-foot-long community garden out of rocks and rubble on Sherman Street. Details.
