Abstract

Members of Local 6 of the International Association of Machinists, the largest union at Bath Iron Works, yesterday voted 3,280 to 1,550 to approve the new three-year agreement between the union and BIW. Around 91 percent of the union's 5,300 members voted, and approval of the contract sets the stage for a restructuring of the company and changes in jobs at the shipyard. The contract, which will bring workers and management together in making decisions about the company's future, has been touted as the means to turn the builder of warships into a shipyard that can compete in the world market for commercial ships.
