Abstract

Paper companies have bid up the cost of hardwood timber, leading to the first price increase in southern Maine in several years. The price for a cord of seasoned wood is around $125, and green firewood is running around $85 per cord. Mainers who heat with firewood are buying more and ordering earlier than last year, in some cases because last winter's cold caused them to run out. Details.
