Abstract

The Portland school system currently has 31 Somali students, with 17 more expected to be enrolled before the end of the year. Although the system has no paid interpreter for the Somalis, the city's nationally recognized Multilingual Education program seems to be dealing with the Somalis and numerous other foreign born students quite well.
