Abstract

A meeting between Maine Attorney General Michael Carpenter and Maine Sheriffs' Association leaders failed to resolve a dispute over a fund-raising campaign by the group, prompting Carpenter to file a lawsuit seeking a declaration that the association had acted illegally. Carpenter maintains that letters sent out by the association soliciting funds violate a state law barring such solicitation by police.
