Abstract

Maine's pulp and paper industry, which pumps nearly $2 billion annually into the state's economy, is suffering from global excess capacity, weak demand, a slow economic recovery and growing competition. Even though most mills in the state are running more efficiently than ever due to modernization projects during the 1980s, some machines are shut down because of the weak demand. One analyst has called the current state of the industry the worst downturn since the 1930s. Details, related article.
