Abstract

In 1807, the schooner Charles wrecked off Richmond's Island, near Cape Elizabeth. Although just fifty feet from shore, 16 of its 22 passengers remained aboard and eventually drowned. Captain Jacob Adams, though safe on nearby rocks, swam back to the boat to save others, himself drowning in the attempt. Article includes original accounts from Portland newspapers. Details.
