Abstract

Kennebunk area residents recall old-time Christmases of the 1900s, 1910s, and 1920s. Interviewers were surprised to find most respondents quiet and thoughtful, rather than giddy and excited, at the memories. Topics covered include decorations; the change in Santa Claus's role; Maine men earning their Christmas money by cutting ice; skating and sledding; and memories, both happy and sad.
