Abstract

In 1702, Stephen Harding built a garrison house near the Kennebunk River on what is today Gooch's Beach. The site was a refuge from Indian attack and later the negiotiating forum at which the Kennebunk-Kennebunkport town line was decided. Gooch's Beach still preserves the same view over Wells Bay toward Oaks Neck.
