Abstract

Tollef Olson, 48, of South Portland, and his business partner, Craig Tanner, 46, own a processing barge and four rafts on two mussel seed farm sites off the coast of Portland. Olson once hunted for sunken treasure and dove for sea urchins but wanted to build a sustainable business on the water. The only other mussel seed farm in New England is operated by Evan Young near Blue Hill. With details on why the men began mussel farming; their work; and the obstacles they face, including toxic red tide, predatory eider ducks, and objections from shorefront homeowners.
