Abstract

Life in the small-town Swedish communities of Aroostook County traces its roots to an 1870 effort by Maine commissioner of immigration William Widgery Thomas, who went to Sweden and recruited immigrants for New Sweden, Maine, and the surrounding towns of Stockholm, Westmanland, and Jemtland. Stockholm remains a close-knit community. Details.
