Abstract

Prices for oil and gasoline in Aroostook County run between 12 cents and 16 cents per gallon more than in Portland. The vastly lower volume of business in Aroostook is one reason for the disparity. The number of competitors, which ranges from six in the St. John Valley to 36 in Bangor and 32 in Portland, is another reason. Some people in the north feel they are paying higher prices as a result of dealers making up in Aroostook some of the profit losses they're experiencing in the south. Details, related articles.
