Abstract

Gov. King has proposed eliminating the Maine Waste Management Agency, saying that the department has done its job in giving communities a hand in establishing serious recycling programs. King isn't quite ready to get rid of the sales taxes that have funded the waste management effort, and has redirected $1.5 million of disposal-related sales taxes to plug holes in the state Department of Human Services. The administration wants the sales taxes phased out over a two-year period.
