Abstract

The Chewonki Foundation in Wiscasset uses a series of artificial wetlands to treat surplus liquid from its more conventional septic system. Falmouth and a half-dozen other towns in Maine have gone a step beyond the Chewonki project, and use constructed wetlands as a way to treat sludge. An obvious drawback to the use of wetlands in Maine is that biological activity slows down in the winter, but one solution is the construction of solar aquatic greenhouses. Details, related article.
