Abstract

Spending by Canadians accounted for as much as half of the retail sales in Bangor during the late 1980s. Merchandising improvements in Canada and an 11 percent provincial sales tax collected at the New Brunswick border have combined to reduce Maine's Canadian clientle by up to two-thirds. Canadian Appreciation Days, last weekend's promotion by the city of Bangor, promoted cross-border shopping.
