Abstract

The Maine Supreme Judicial Court has ruled that a judge may suggest but not mandate how the Department of Corrections should handle particular prisoners. The ruling is the second stage of a confrontation that began when a Superior Court judge ruled two borderline mentally retarded sexual abusers must receive special protection while housed at the state prison.
