Abstract

Loring Air Force Base in Limestone was built at the beginning of the Cold War, and the base once housed more than 10,000 people. The closing of Loring in 1993 affected Limestone and its 2,000 residents, but the shock of the closing is passing and the beginning of a slow recovery might be at hand. The Maine School of Science and Mathematics is scheduled to open September 5, a Defense Finance Accounting Center opened July 28 and a federal Job Corps center is scheduled to open next year. Details on the battle to open the school, profiles of the school's faculty.
