Abstract

Portions of the Maine potato harvest have been declared a disaster for each of the past four years, and farmers dealt with a particularly virulent form of potato blight in 1993 and 1994. This year's dry weather appears to be helping to control the blight, but may lead to low harvests throughout Aroostook County. During the peak years of the 1940s, 3,000 farmers tilled 232,000 acres of potatoes, but last year 650 farms planted a mere 80,000 acres. Details.
