Abstract

Commissioner Joseph Lehman of the Maine Department of Corrections last week presented a savings plan to the Productivity Realization Task Force that calls for a net loss of 156.5 general fund positions from his department, which now has 1,223.5 general fund jobs. There are currently 55 probation officers in the adult corrections system and 37 in the juvenile system, none of which are slated to be cut. Each probation officer has between 100 and 200 cases, and Lehman wants to provide them with laptop computers, voice mail, cellular phones and portable fax machines so they can spend more time in the field.
