Abstract

Maine is the nation's top exporter of cow embryos, with sales having reached $1.2 million annually. Demand comes mostly from Western Europe and Japan, and Holstein embryos sell for between $300 and $4,000 apiece. The embryo market first developed in the 1980s, and there are currently around 30 dairy farms selling embryos.
