Abstract

An unusually large number of moose yearlings died during last year's mild winter, and biologists are baffled as to the cause of the deaths. Douglas Kane of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is asking this season's moose hunters to turn over the lungs of any calves or yearlings less than 500 pounds that are bagged, in the hopes that autopsies will help determine the cause of last year's deaths. Brainworm has been ruled out as the cause of death, but lungworm is suspected. Details.
