Abstract

Lewiston voters in November 1993 repealed by a 2-1 margin an ordinance prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation. Equal Protection Lewiston was formed to oppose the repeal, and members of the coalition have different opinions as to why their efforts failed, and why different factions within the group were divided. Maine Won't Discriminate, formed to oppose referendum Question One, have little to say about the Lewiston vote, but is being careful to maintain cohesion among its members.
