Food & Water, an activist organization based in Vermont, is encouraging consumers to register their concerns with regional grocery chains about the dangers of toxic chemicals used in food harvesting. Shaw's supermarkets is the target in northern New England, mostly due to its size and prominence. Shaw's, which devotes between 6 and 18 feet of cooler space in a typical supermarket to organic produce, encourages its growers to use integrated pest management techniques. The Food & Water campaign began in Maine last week, and Shaw's representatives say they have not yet received many phone calls. Details.
