Abstract

Maine arts currently pull in slightly less than $1 million annually in federal subsidies, and Maine ranks 52nd out of 56 states and territories in local public dollars allocated to art on a per capita basis. Congress is preparing to cut funding to the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Maine arts community is bracing itself for massive setbacks. Nearly two-thirds of this year's federal art subisidies was funneled through the Maine Arts Commission, with the remaining one-third going directly to 27 community arts organizations and individual artists in the state.
