Abstract

The Maine College of Art next month will open the doors on the first phase of the remodeled and renovated Porteous building. The $10.7 million project will more than double MECA's floor space, and will consolidate operations from 11 downtown buildings. MECA has a current enrollment of 300, projected to increase to 450 within ten years. Roger Gilman, MECA director, credits the school with being a catalyst for redevelopment on Portland's Congress Street, and doesn't believe the downtown district development or the involvement of Elizabeth Noyce would have occurred without MECA.
