The Maine Department of Human Services receives around 30,000 referrals of abuse or neglect annually, with some 10,000 investigated each year. The 10,000 investigations produce around 5,100 substantiated cases of abuse or neglect, and DHS seeks custody in around 15 percent of those cases.
