Abstract

Maine's major workers' compensation insurance carriers have proposed a 5.5 percent annual assessment on all insurance companies in the state through the year 2002 as a way to wipe out a $450 million deficit in the assigned risk pool. The pool, which operated between 1988 and 1992, contained up to 90 percent of all Maine companies that purchased workers' compensation insurance.
