Abstract

Representatives of several mental health organizations last week offered an informal forum in the State House to show the public how the mentally handicapped can be helped outside state mental hospitals in Augusta and Bangor. John Shaw of Kennebec Valley Mental Health Center said the transition from a reliance on AMHI and BMHI to a system where patients are treated while living in communities is underway. Gov. King plans to appoint a mental health study commission to examine changes in the state's mental health system.
