Abstract

Smiling Hill Farm in Westbrook is a 450-acre oasis in a sea of suburban and industrial development. Warren Knight and his family have opened a petting zoo, offer a summer camp to teach kids how to tend farm animals, and produce 160 flavors of ice cream made with milk from the farm. The Knights used 400 acres of woodlot to expand a small sawmill into a building products company, then created a cross-country ski center on the network of logging roads. Knight now plans to sell his own milk direct from the farm, in returnable glass bottles. Details.
