Abstract

According to a 1993 study, more than one-third of Americans are no receiving some sort of alternative health care, spending an estimated $13.7 billion annually. Insurers are finding that the nonconventional treatments can save them money, but reimbursement policies vary widely. Healthsource of Maine reimburses members for acupuncture, biofeedback and hypnosis where acute problems persist and traditional treatments have been unsuccessful. Medical Billing and Collection of Saco works only with alternative practitioners, and has 102 clients from Maine to Virginia, and is working with Mercy Hospital's Breast Health Center to obtain coverage for lymph drainage by manual therapists. Details, related article on LD 1852, which would license naturopaths in Maine.
