Abstract

Shepard Harris hired Champion International of Bucksport to selectively cut his 520-acre parcel in the Town Hill district of Bar Harbor and the neighboring town of Mount Desert. A citizens group, concerned that the logging was a prelude to large-scale development, banded together to protest the cutting. Harris, a Bangor businessman and island resident, owns or co-owns, through Land Co. Partnership, hundreds of acres on Mount Desert Island. Harris said the large-scale development the citizens group fears will not happen anytime soon, but his involvement in numerous developments on Mount Desert Island have not helped his credibility with the Town Hill neighborhood.
