Abstract

The Maine Center for Economic Policy and the Maine Children's Alliance recently issued "Maine's Families: Poverty Despite Work," a study of Maine's poor. Some 70 percent of families now falling below the federal poverty line have at least one parent who works. The study suggests raising the state minimum wage, enacting a state earned income tax credit and allowing those now receiving welfare benefits to retain a larger share of those benefits as they re-enter the workforce.
