Abstract

Details on recent developments in the effort to produce an alternative to November's clear-cutting referendum. Environmental groups protested last week when the paper industry began running advertisements opposing the referendum, prompting Gov. King to ask that the ads be pulled. Negotiations on an alternative to the referendum focused on how landowners would comply with any regulations on liquidation harvests. Citizens for a Healthy Forest and Economy, the group opposing the referendum, has raised nearly $2 million, while Ban clear-cutting has raised $54,763.
