Home Quarters, owned by the Hechinger Company of Maryland, opened its first store in South Portland in 1991, and in 1995 opened a store with 25 percent more space on the same site. Home Depot, which has doubled HQ in sales markets where the two coexist, is planning a 130,000-square-foot store near Exit 8 of the Maine Turnpike in Portland. Roland Foster of Trustworthy Hardware in Falmouth said business was rough when HQ first arrived, but customers are returning and his store has made adjustments.
