Abstract

Home Quarters, owned by the Hechinger Company of Maryland, opened its first store in South Portland in 1991, and in 1995 opened a store with 25 percent more space on the same site. Home Depot, which has doubled HQ in sales markets where the two coexist, is planning a 130,000-square-foot store near Exit 8 of the Maine Turnpike in Portland. Roland Foster of Trustworthy Hardware in Falmouth said business was rough when HQ first arrived, but customers are returning and his store has made adjustments. Details, related article on Wal-Mart's supercenter food stores.
