Abstract

Co-housing, which began in Denmark 20 years ago, involves both philosophical and physical alternatives to conventional home ownership. Co-housing often involves cluster developments of duplex and triplex homes, and the areas set aside for the homes and community buildings represent a small portion of the land owned jointly by the community. Michael Barber is owner of The Community Company, formerly Kennebec Valley Co-Housing, which has been trying for five years to bring a co-housing neighborhood to Readfield. Robert Weiner is president of The Cumberland County Co-Housing Community of Brunswick, where construction should begin this fall. Details.
