Abstract

Every two years the Maine Emergency Management Agency, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and representatives from the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission lead a massive evacuation drill that simulates a nuclear emergency at the Maine Yankee nuclear power plant in Wiscasset. Beepers went off at 5:30 P.M. on June 19 to alert state and local participants of this year's drill, and the command center at the State Office Building in Augusta was the nerve center of the operation. MEMA officials say an evacuation would be no problem if a nuclear catastrophe were to occur, but skepticism remains. Details.
