Abstract

The Maine Center for Economic Policy is distributing a report that says the Maine families and individuals with the lowest incomes pay a higher percentage of their wages in taxes than all the groups above them on the pay scale. State senator Norman Ferguson, R-Hanover, who is serving on a state task force studying poverty among working parents, said there is something to the notion that low-income people have too large a state tax burden. The report shows that Maine taxes its wealthy citizens at a higher rate than the national average, and is easier on the working poor than most states.
