Abstract

Maine is home to three large military facilities (Loring Air Force Base, Brunswick Naval Air Station and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery) and 15 smaller military bases with identified toxic contamination, as well as 100 former military sites where contamination is suspected. A total of 223 sites throughout Maine have been identified for cleanup by the Department of Defense, and the cost of that cleanup continues to increase.
