Abstract

An outbreak of cyclospora affected three people in Maine and as many as 1,000 around the country. News reports listed strawberries and/or raspberries as a possible source, creating the potential for trouble for Maine's $2 million strawberry and raspberry crop. The outbreak attracted more attention from the media in Maine than from consumers or farmers. The Maine Bureau of Health and the federal Centers for Disease Control say washing fruits and vegetables can help reduce the chance of infection.
