Abstract

John Brier of Scarborough is mounting a referendum campaign to raise the legal age for purchasing tobacco products in Maine from 18 to 21. Brier points to national studies that indicate only three percent of the 5,000 people who start smoking each day are over the age of 21. The Maine Bureau of Health reports that 3,000 children start smoking each year in Maine, and 35 percent of Maine teenagers smoke.
