Abstract

Maine Businesses for Social Responsibility creates status for companies that follow a written set of principles, but has no plans to become a watchdog group for the state's business community. MSBR's membership has doubled in two years, and the group now has 200 businesses involved. The group has taken a more active role on public issues, such as the anti-gay rights referendum last year and this fall's clear-cutting referendum. MSBR Director Susie Schweppe said the board of directors would like grade members on various measures of social responsibility.
