Abstract

Rite Aid Corp. of Pennsylvania dominates the state's drugstore market, and is proceeding with renovation plans for 47 of its 93 Maine stores. The company recently completed construction of an 11,180 square foot store in Saco, and will soon open a drugstore in Ellsworth that is bigger than some supermarkets. Rite Aid plans to purchase the 150-year-old Katahdin building and two adjoining properties in Orono, and is encountering strong opposition from local residents. Michael Fiori, president of Downeast Pharmacy, said his Hampden store lost business after a Rite Aid opened next door, but has received a tremendous call from the public to expand. Details.
