Abstract
Joseph Brennan, Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, supports the idea of using plastic taggants in gunpowder. Susan Collins, the Republican candidate, says the additives would affect the performance and safety of gunpowder used by sportsmen and target shooters. Carl Boyers, a retired research chemist, said the additives work well and pose no dangers. Boyers and physicist Gerald Fuller said industry opposes taggants because of the fear of lawsuits if explosives used in crimes are traced back to them.
