Abstract

Maine is prone to high levels of ozone because of the tendency for automotive exhaust and industrial emissions to drift north and east on prevailing winds. Half of excess atomospheric ozone in Maine stems from automobile emissions, and much of it originates in the state. The Maine Department of Environmental Protection urges only essential use of vehicles during ozone alerts, and suggests commuters use public transportation, ride bicycles or carpool.
