Abstract

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service this week issued a biological opinion that dioxin from paper mills will lead to lower reproductive success in eagles along the Penobscot River. Eagles in Maine continue to rank as some of the most contaminated in the world, and show low reproductive success. The Natural Resources Council of Maine called for an end to dioxin releases, and the Maine Bureau of Health has issued a warning not to eat fish from the lower Penobscot and Androscoggin rivers.
