Abstract

Independent midwives can practice in Maine without any required qualifications. Sally Morrison of Waldoboro, an independent midwife since 1992, is facing criminal charges of reckless conduct stemming from a birth she attended in Bath in February 1995. Advocates of independent midwifery question the merits of the case and wonder if it is just an opportunity to put independent midwives on trial. A group of legislators and medical professionals is currently researching the status of independent midwives for possible legislation during the next session of the Maine Legislature. Details.
