A citizen initiative proposed by Nancy Oden of Jonesboro would make it illegal to put pesticides in Maine waters, and would make violations of the law a crime. The Maine Farm Bureau has filed suit to challenge the wording of the proposed referendum, which could prevent referendum supporters from gathering signatures at the polls next month. The Maine Secretary of State's office has approved the referendum's wording and is helping Oden with the petition forms. The Maine Farm Bureau's legal challenge centers on the language making it a crime to put pesticides in Maine waters, since the wording does not discuss intent.
